Elucidating the sophisticated epigenetic strategies that plants employ to survive harsh environmental stresses is of paramount importance, making the comprehensive characterization of the functionally uncharacterized PFP (PHD Finger Protein) gene highly crucial. This gene was originally identified and investigated in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana as a homolog of the Mlo2 gene from the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. While previous studies have shown that PFP represses flowering by modulating flowering-related genes, tissue-specific expression profiling reveals that PFP is most abundantly expressed not in the leaves or stems, but in the “roots”, where its physiological role remains completely unknown. Focusing on the roots—where PFP exhibits its maximum expression—my research aims to decode and clarify the unknown physiological functions of this gene.
